Due to personal circumstances, I was unable to attend the various field trips organized for the Design with Others course. For this reason, and with the aim of compensating for the information and experience I was unable to acquire, I will undertake an additional and evaluable task.
This task will consist of developing an intervention proposal based on the principles of Design Justice, with the objective of creating a solution that prioritizes social justice, inclusion, and the active participation of affected communities. In addition to complementing the knowledge gained throughout the course, this proposal aims to provide a critical and applied reflection on how design can serve as a tool for positive and equitable societal change.
Additionally, this briefing will be linked to the values of my personal project, Cancel·lat, integrating an intervention that addresses both themes and contributes to the objectives of the course as well as the broader vision of the project.
Design Justice is a framework that challenges traditional design practices by prioritizing equity, inclusion, and the needs of historically marginalized communities. Unlike conventional approaches that often center on market-driven innovation or mainstream user needs, Design Justice focuses on co-creating solutions with, rather than for, affected communities. It acknowledges the power structures embedded in design and seeks to redistribute this power to promote social justice and collective well-being.
This concept is based on Design Justice Network Principles, which emphasize community leadership, sustainability, intersectionality, and participatory decision-making. The approach ensures that the design process does not reinforce existing inequalities but instead fosters liberation, accessibility, and systemic transformation.
